Tibet reports marked progress in infrastructure construction

Tibet invested heavily this year in building 52 of the 117 major infrastructure
projects set by the Chinese government in June 2001; 16 had been completed
by the end of September, according to the statistics from the regional

Ancient prison under repair for tourism

Tibet's largest ancient prison is under repair and expected to be
opened to the public in May of next year.
Costing of 500,000 yuan (US$60,241), the project on Langzisha aims
to restore the original look of the ancient prison and to help people
learn about Tibet's history, local officials said. (more

Construction of Qinghai-Tibet Rail

Workers lay railroad tracks near the Tongtianhe River at a construction
site of the Qinghai-Tibet Railway on Aug. 13, 2004. The railway, linking
Xining, capital of northwest China's Qinghai Province, and Lhasa,
capital of southwest China's Tibet Autonomous Region, has the highest
altitude in the world.

Tibet for mountaineering in 2005

Sources from Tibet Mountaineering Association, Tibet will be busy
with meeting mountaineering expeditions abroad in 2005 because there
will be a series of mountaineering activities. It is said that next
spring, Sino-Japan mountaineering team will scale the 8848.13-meter
Mount Everest for celebrating 30th anniversary of succeeding in conquering
Mount Everest by Female. According to the association, Tibet will
go on organizing Mount Everest Protecting Activity not only for picking
garbage, but also for conquering Mount Everest. Besides, Tibet Mountaineering
Expedition will step on the 8068 m Gasherbrums I next year and till
then, Tibet Mountaineering Expedition will be conquered all the 14
mountains which are over 8000 meters. And there will also be a mountaineering
activity for climbing Sangdainkangsang peak which lies in the middle
of Nyainqentanglha Mountains, at the seal level of 6,590 meters.
Aid Tibet Guides Contribute to Tibet Tourism Industry
The six-month aid Tibet work of 2004 was finished and the second group
of aid Tibet guides would return their home. October 13th, the summarizing
meeting was held for the second group of aid Tibet guides. Officials
of Tibet government and State Tourism Bureau attended the meeting
